Mature/Shade Tree Pruning
Pruning mature trees is the best way to manage trees in our urban and suburban landscape. While best done proactively before a problem arises, more intensive practices can be exercised in certain situations to regain control of a mismanaged tree.
Crown Reduction
This practice thins or heads back branches to reduce tree height and/or spread of the tree canopy by pruning back leaders to lateral branches. This is done to manage a tree whose natural form and size could become too large for the given area.
Crown Cleaning and Thinning
This practice is the removal of dead, dying, diseased, crowded, weakly attached, low vigor branches, and water sprouts from the tree. This selective removal of branches is done to increase light and air penetration/circulation throughout the crown as well as maintain overall health and appearance of the tree.
Ornamental Pruning & Hedge Shearing
At Between Two Pines, we take great pride in our ornamental pruning. All pruning on ornamental landscape shrubs is done with hand pruners and are never sheared, with the exception of formal hedges. From foundation plantings to satellite garden beds, we will keep your shrubs healthy and well kept.
Pruning Vs Shearing
When it comes to shaping your ornamental plant, selectively pruning is preferred over shearing. It may take a little more time, but the health and aesthetics will be better in the end. Here is why:
Pruning is the practice of selectively removing branches throughout the shrub for proper size, health and structure while shearing targets just the outer edges of a shrub strictly for aesthetics.
Pruning cuts encourage growth throughout the plant; but with shearing, growth is limited to the plant’s outer parts, and prohibits healthy interior growth.
Selective pruning practices remove older declining foliage. Shearing removes young healthy foliage.
Pruning cuts cater to the plant’s natural shape, while shearing cuts train the plant to take an artificial look.
Pruning allows you to dictate the plant’s size. With shearing, it’s harder to control how large the shrub gets.
Tree Removal
Although tree removal is a last resort, there are circumstances when it is necessary. We can help you decide whether a tree can be saved through other management practices.
Here are some reasons removal would be appropriate:
The tree is dead or dying
The tree is considered irreparably hazardous
The tree is causing an obstruction that is impossible to correct through pruning
The tree is crowding or causing harm to other trees
The tree is to be replaced by a more suitable specimen
The tree needs to be removed for new construction
Planting & Transplanting
From planting a hedge for screening to making your landscape dream come true and everything in-between, we can help you select the right varieties for your property. All of our planting stock comes from local nurseries that you can trust.
Our experience transplanting existing trees and shrubs from their current location to a more appropriate one can help from the need to cut down established plants or buying new stock.
